About us
Who are we?
We are a Nursery located within Baker Barracks Thorney Island.

Thorney Island Nursery opened in January 2004 having previously operated as a crèche since 1987. The nursery is committee run and mainly serves army personnel and the local community.

We offer childcare for children aged 9 months to 5 years old.
We currently work between two buildings, the smaller building being used for the under 2's with its own self contained astro-turfed garden. The larger building is used for our preschool age group which has a large room, snack room, and large garden for outdoor activities.

All our meals are freshly prepared on site by our cook and we have a large variation of foods for all cultures & dietary requirements.

We have a direct link to Thorney Island Community Primary School as we offer a breakfast and after school club service and walk to and from the nursery to the school.
Our curriculum and the EYFS
At Thorney Island nursery it is our intention to make our setting accessible to children and families from all sections of the local community. We actively promote inclusion, equality of opportunity, the valuing of diversity and British values. We strive to ensure that every child has the same opportunities, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity or beliefs. We promote children's right to be strong, resilient and listened to by creating an environment in our setting that encourages children to develop a positive self image.
Our curriculum is based around the children, their individual needs, interests and what they already know (cultural capital). We use this knowledge to plan activities which will provide new opportunities and experiences to challenge and expand their knowledge, understanding and skills.
We do this by providing resources that are open ended and will spark the children’s imagination, allowing them to consider why, what and how? Give them the tools to be able to experiment with and build on their knowledge and take risks through their play.
Be doing this the children will become independent, strong individuals and will be ready for the next stage in their life.
